Configurators and Interactive Quoting Tools

I build tools that let your customers configure a product and see an accurate price themselves, without a phone call.

When a product has too many options to explain over the phone or in a catalogue, every quote becomes a bottleneck. Someone on your team has to walk the customer through the choices, check the pricing sheet, and get back to them, often more than once. That is slow for the customer and expensive for you, and it caps how many quotes you can realistically send in a day.

A configurator removes that bottleneck. The customer builds the product themselves, option by option, and sees the price update live as they go. They can do this at 11pm on a Sunday, on their phone, without waiting on anyone. What used to be a back and forth over email becomes a self service tool that runs around the clock and hands your sales team a qualified, priced request instead of a blank inquiry.

I design and build these end to end: the option logic, the pricing engine, the visual layer, and the output. I have done this for an aerospace manufacturer, a luxury watch brand, and a premium tyre brand, and the same thinking applies at a smaller scale for an independent business with a complicated product line.

What's included

Option logic and a pricing engine built around your actual pricing

Every configurator starts with the rules: which options are compatible with which, what happens when a customer picks a size that rules out a material, what triggers a surcharge. I map this against how you actually price the product today, whether that lives in a spreadsheet, an ERP, or in someone's head, and turn it into logic that updates the price live as options change, so the number on screen is always accurate, not a rough estimate.

Real time 3D or clean 2D visualisation, whichever the product needs

Some products genuinely need 3D. If colour, texture, or shape matters to the decision, seeing the product update in real time as options change is what makes the tool trustworthy. Other products do not need it at all: a clear layout with good photography or diagrams and unambiguous option logic can do the job for less money and less build time. I recommend whichever one actually serves the sale, not whichever one looks more impressive in a portfolio.

Instant quote output as a PDF, an email, or straight into your sales pipeline

A configurator is only useful if the result goes somewhere. Once a customer finishes building their configuration, I set up the output to match how your team actually works: a branded PDF quote sent instantly, an email notification to sales, a lead dropped into your CRM, or a combination of these. The goal is that a finished configuration turns into a real, actionable quote without anyone re-typing anything.

Connected to your existing pricing sheet, spreadsheet, or system

Nobody wants to maintain pricing logic in two places. Where it makes sense, I connect the configurator directly to your existing pricing sheet or system, so when you update a price or add a new option on your end, it reflects in the tool without a developer needing to touch the code. Where a direct connection is not practical, I build a simple update process that your team can run without me.

Proven at scale

These are not mockups. Each of the following is a configurator I designed and built that shipped and is used in production by the client's sales or retail team.

VR cabin configurator interior for a business jet

VR Cabin Configurator, Business Jets

A photorealistic virtual reality configurator for an aircraft manufacturer's business jet cabin, covering 83 million possible combinations of layout, materials, and finishes, working the same way across PC VR, iPad, and desktop. Physical material samples fitted with NFC chips let a client tap a fabric swatch and see it applied instantly inside the headset.

Luxury watch configurator, rose gold chronograph

In Boutique Configurator, Luxury Watch Brand

A photorealistic real time configurator covering four collections and every current model on iPad and PC, plus a touchless retail kiosk built around Ultraleap hand tracking, letting customers browse case and strap options and trigger an exploded view animation using hand gestures alone, no screen contact required.

Tyre configurator 3D view on iPad

3D Visual Configurator, Premium Tyre Brand

A point of sale iPad configurator with augmented reality, letting customers and salespeople build a tyre's full specification together, lettering style, sidewall colour, model, and watch the 3D wheel update live with every choice, then view it on their own vehicle through AR and share the result.

Common questions

Does it need to be 3D?

No, and I will tell you honestly when it does not. 3D earns its place when seeing the product change shape, colour, or texture in real time is actually part of the decision, which is often true for watches, tyres, furniture, or vehicles. For a lot of configurable products, a clean 2D layout with clear photography and unambiguous option logic works just as well, costs less, and ships faster. I scope this after understanding your product, not before.

Can it connect to my existing pricing sheet or ERP?

In most cases, yes. I scope the integration per project, since every business keeps pricing somewhere different, a spreadsheet, a proper ERP, or a custom internal system. Where a direct live connection is not practical or not worth the cost for your scale, I build a straightforward way for your team to update pricing themselves without needing a developer every time.

How long does a configurator take to build?

Typically two to four weeks, depending on how many options and rules are involved. A configurator with a handful of straightforward options can move faster. One with dozens of interdependent choices, real time 3D, and a pricing integration takes longer. You will usually see a working, clickable version within the first week, so we are making decisions by looking at something real.

Do you handle the 3D asset creation too?

Yes, I can build the 3D assets from scratch, work from your existing CAD files or renders, or use client-provided assets directly, whichever gets to a good result fastest. I will tell you upfront which option makes sense for your product and budget.
